Insight

Yesterday was the last productive day of the year for Swedish construction. From today until New Year's Eve, every working day goes to paying for errors, defects and rework.

Boverket estimates the annual cost of errors, deficiencies and damage at up to SEK 111 billion. This corresponds to approximately 25 percent of the construction industry’s annual turnover.

Translated into time, the losses correspond to the final three months of the year.

The construction industry works all year, but a full quarter of its resources goes to fixing what went wrong. When information is missing or project documents are unclear, people spend their time searching, asking and redoing work. That time and expertise should have moved projects forward.

Our report The Cost of Standing Still, produced together with Newground Alliance, estimates the Swedish construction sector’s annual productivity gap at SEK 164 billion.

Since 1980, productivity in the construction sector has increased by 18 percent. Over the same period, productivity in the market economy as a whole has more than doubled. The report explores better ways of working, access to information.

We aims to make the date arrive later next year. An entire quarter is too much to lose every year.
